The training will equip you to deal with the range of calls that helpline volunteers can expect.
The course consists of role-plays, group exercises, information system training, as well as sexual health and HIV training. Initial training takes place over 4 consecutive Saturdays or 8 weeknights (usually Wednesdays), and volunteers must be able to attend all sessions.
Is there a test?
At the end of the course you'll be assessed (using role-plays) to ensure that you meet the required standard to speak to callers. There is no written test.
What happens when I pass the training?
You will then do another 21 hours with other volunteers, before being able to take calls completely on your own.
After 33 hours on the telephone you will meet with a senior member of LLGS and, if everything is OK, your initial training will be complete.
Volunteers can propose topics on which they would like further training and all volunteers are required to undergo refresher training every couple of years.
