The training will equip you to deal with the range of calls that help line volunteers can expect.
The course consists of role-plays, group exercises, information system training, as well as sexual health and HIV training. Initial training takes place over 6 consecutive Saturdays or 10 weeknights, and volunteers must be able to attend all sessions.
Is there a test?
At the end of the course you'll be assessed (using role-plays) to ensure that you meet the required standard to speak to callers. There is no written test
What happens when I pass the training?
If you successful pass the course you'll be assigned a personal trainer who will provide ongoing support during the real situations you will face during your initial 10 hours of phone room shifts.
You will then do another 25 hours with other volunteers, before being able to take calls completely on your own.
After 35 hours on the telephone you will meet with the Volunteer Coordinator and if everything is ok your initial training will be complete.
Further training
However training does not stop there, informal training sessions are organised around once a month on a variety of topics. Volunteers can propose topics on which they would like further training and all volunteers are required to undergo refresher training every couple of years.
